Best Albums of 2007

07 was a great year in music, and expect a lot more posting of music
on the blog, so here we go..

Top ten albums of 2007:

10. Burial - Untrue

When I started seeing Burial on all the music blogs this year,
I was really skeptical about this 'dubstep' but when I downloaded
this album and listened to it on some good speakers,
it was an experience.

9. Klaxons: Myths of the Near Future

THE nu rave album. J.G. Ballard and Burroughs, sci-fi rock!

8. Peter Bjorn and John - Writer's Block

Gotta love Swedish rock! Young Folks was definitely a single
of the year, and is definitely a classic in my eyes.

PB & J - Up Against The Wall

7. LCD Soundsystem: Sound of Silver

2007 seems to be the year of the sophomore record, because this
record shows a lot of potential for LCD, All My Friends and Someone Great
are two songs that should be on everyone's playlist.. great song writing.

LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends

6. Justice -

French dance is back, along with Daft Punk, this duo pretty much makes
dance music what it is today. D.A.N.C.E. was the anthem of the summer,
and the rest of the album is strong all the way through.

Justice - D.A.N.C.E.

5. The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

There are definitely some great songs on this new record.
The Arcade Fire really knows how to put out an album with a concept
behind it, and you can definitely see that with the artwork and this awesome
website they have.

The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

4. Kanye West - Graduation

Biggest hip hop record to hit the market in years! This was really on a
whole 'nother level, Kanye did everything and anything on this one.
The music videos were on spot, the artwork from Murakami was also a plus,
but looked kinda cheesy with the cover. Almost every track was enjoyable
to listen to, and the sampling from Daft cannotgo unspoken..
Stronger broke down barriers!

3. Radiohead - In Rainbows

The album that changed it all! Radiohead is the epitome of a rock
band. I can't think of anything they have done wrong in the time they've
been together. There is no question that this album will forever be remembered,
timeless music and timeless distribution strategy. It just gets better with every listen.
All I Need was definitely my highlight for this one.

2. Bloc Party - A Weekend In The City

Most music people put this down as a disappointment, but I really
cannot see that in the least bit with this one. Their sound has definitely
evolved and Kele's vocals and lyrics are much better than Silent Alarm.
Can't wait 'till the next one!

Bloc Party - The Prayer

1. M.I.A. - Kala

WE GOT MORE RECORDS THAN THE KGB!
Hands down the best album of the year. This album had it all, the truest
WORLD album that has ever been made (Afrikan Boy, Wilcannia Mob,
samples from Sri Lanka!) Bamboo Banga starts it off strong, and it ends with
probably the most popular song off this album, Paper Planes. Watching her
live was probably the coolest concert I will ever experience. Everyone
should have this album, no matter how you get it, GET IT.
Highlights: EVERY TRACK ON THA ALBUM!

M.I.A. - Jimmy

Patterns

came by this site, found this,

We're excellent pattern-matchers. That's what the human mind does — it's a pattern-matching engine. So we look at ourselves, at our history, at our behaviors, and we draw straight lines between the points — we assume that just because we've done things a certain way in the past, we'll always do them that way in the future.

beautifully said,

if your into hallucinating patterns, check this, and look at it for thirty seconds,
then look off into anything or anyone, and you will think you are tripping out.

GUCK FAP!..

Police have rescued 14 children from a New Delhi sweatshop at the centre of a scandal involving US clothing giant Gap.

Despite reports over the weekend that a Gap supplier had sub-contracted work to the illegal sweatshop in the Shahpur Jat area of Delhi, Indian police did not raid the address until the Daily Telegraph produced photographs of the children still at work.

The Telegraph visited the complex posing as a buyer for a fictional boutique fashion outlet in London.

"The children are aged eight to 15 and at least three of them have told me already that they were working for no pay at all."

After negotiations with managers to view the quality of the workmanship and photograph samples, The Telegraph was shown to a series of 12 dingy rooms where both adults and children squatted on the floor performing delicate embroidery and stitching.

After their rescue, the children, who come from impoverished families in rural West Bengal, eastern India, were taken to a local police station where they were processed.

This really hit home for me, for obvious reasons.
It absolutely disgusts me to even own anything Gap anymore.
Can it really get any worse than the (RED) campaign AGAINST poverty while your clothes
are made by 10 year old kids living in poverty?
It's a shame to see a company do this while being endorsed by so many great people for worthy cause when really, you can't even be sure if your money is going to the right places.

And I wonder why this story was no where near our main lines of media?
I will never buy Gap again.

How to Make the World Livable

Santa's Ghetto
Bethlehem
2007
An art show put on by Banksy and some company,

Bethlehem is one of the most contentious places on earth.

Perched at the edge of the Judaen desert at the intersection of Europe, Asia and Africa in the state of Palestine it was governed by the British following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. After World War II the United Nations voted to partition the region into two states - one Jewish, one Arab and there’s been fighting ever since.

It’s obviously not the job of a loose collection of idiot doodlers to tell you what’s right or wrong about this situation, so you’re advised to do further reading yourself (this month’s National Geographic has an excellent article all about Bethlehem).

We would like to make it very clear Santa’s Ghetto is not allied to ANY race, creed, religion, political organization or lobby group. As an organisation the only thing we’ll say on behalf of our artists is that we don’t speak on behalf of our artists. This show simply offers the ink-stained hand of friendship to ordinary people in an extraordinary situation.

Every shekel made in the store will be used on local projects for children and young people. Not one cent will go to any political groups, governmental institutions or, in fact, any grown-ups at all.

Salaam.

I'd say you have to look into this one.. (closer)

Obama

Obama drank and experimented with drugs, but he does not hide that. Instead he talks about them honestly, to a group of kids at a high school:

I made some bad decisions that I’ve actually written about. You know, got into drinking. I experimented with drugs. There was a whole stretch of time that I didn’t really apply myself a lot. It wasn’t until I got out of high school and went to college that I started realizing, “Man, I wasted a lot of time.”

Saul Williams, megapost

First of all, Saul Williams is a poet

Coded Language

"We are determining the future at this very moment.
We now know that the heart is the philosophers' stone
Our music is our alchemy"

"Let your children name themselves and claim themselves as the new day for
today we are determined to be the channelers of these changing frequencies
into songs, paintings, writings, dance, drama, photography, carpentry,
crafts, love, and love.
We enlist every instrument: Acoustic, electronic.
Every so-called race, gender, and sexual preference.
Every per-son as beings of sound to acknowledge their responsibility to
uplift the consciousness of the entire fucking World."

and an open letter to miss Oprah Winfrey, which I thought completely represents the ideas of today's hip hop, you can read the whole thing here.

Dear Ms. Winfrey,

...
Thus, the most popular emcees of our age are often those that claim to be heartless or show no feelings or signs of emotion. The poet, on the other hand, is the one who realizes that their vulnerability is their power.

We cannot address the root of what plagues Hip Hop without addressing the root of what plagues today's society and the world.

You see, Ms. Winfrey, at it's worse; Hip Hop is simply a reflection of the society that birthed it. Our love affair with gangsterism and the denigration of women is not rooted in Hip Hop; rather it is rooted in the very core of our personal faith and religions. The gangsters that rule Hip Hop are the same gangsters that rule our nation. 50 Cent and George Bush have the same birthday (July 6th). For a Hip Hop artist to say "I do what I wanna do/Don't care if I get caught/The DA could play this mothafukin tape in court/I'll kill you/ I ain't playin'" epitomizes the confidence and braggadocio we expect an admire from a rapper who claims to represent the lowest denominator. When a world leader with the spirit of a cowboy (the true original gangster of the West: raping, stealing land, and pillaging, as we clapped and cheered.) takes the position of doing what he wants to do, regardless of whether the UN or American public would take him to court, then we have witnessed true gangsterism and violent negligence. Yet, there is nothing more negligent than attempting to address a problem one finds on a branch by censoring the leaves.

Like the rest of the world, I watched footage on AOL of you dancing mindlessly to 50 Cent on your fiftieth birthday as he proclaimed, "I got the ex/if you're into taking drugs/ I'm into having sex/ I ain't into making love" and you looked like you were having a great time. No judgment. I like that song too. Just as I do, James Brown's Sex Machine or Grand Master Flashes "White Lines". Sex, drugs, and rock and roll is how the story goes. Censorship will never solve our problems. It will only foster the sub-cultures of the underground, which inevitably inhabit the mainstream. There is nothing more mainstream than the denigration of women as projected through religious doctrine.

We are a nation at war. What we fail to see is that we are fighting ourselves.

incubi

To resist is to piss in the wind.
Anyone who does will end up smelling.
Knowing this, why do I defy?
Because my inner voice is yelling.
There is a fist pressing against anyone who thinks something compelling.
Our intuit we're taught to deny,
and our soul we're told is for selling.
Get out from under them
resist and multiply!
Get out from under precipice and see the sky!
Get out from under them
Resist, unlearn, defy!
Get out from under precipice and see the sky!
